A good tune-up isn't just good for your bike . . .it might just save you from serious injury, too!
Whether your an all-weather cyclist and you've been riding all winter, or if you're just now thinking about that bike (as it will surely warm up soon!) it's a good idea to consider what your bike needs for the upcoming warm weather season.
Cleaning - it's important to start with a clean bicycle. Getting that grit off the bike will make its components last much longer and you'll find smoother shifting and overall less trouble as well. While you're cleaning the bike, take time to get a close up look at it. Look for hairline cracks or other signs of wear. If you're not sure, bring in for one of Sunshine Bike Shops' mechanics to inspect it.
Clean the chain, chain rings, cassette, derailleurs and similar parts with a good biodegradable cleaning solvent.
I use a couple of sizes of old toothbrushes and larger brushes to get in between gaps to get rid of the grit and dirt. I try to limit the amount of water for rinsing as particle and avoid high-pressure water into sensitive areas like bearings - this could cause more problems if you're not careful.
I also like to remove the seat post and wipe it off, then reapply a small layer of grease before reinstalling it.
Then be sure to re-lube your chain with a lubricant to match the riding you'll be doing. I use a different lube for road riding than I do on my mountain bike - match the lube best for you.
Brake system check - be sure to carefully unfasten the brake cable and look to see if the pads are wearing evenly. If you find ridges or uneven wear, they may need a more advanced adjustment. Bring it by the shop.
Wheels - I like to clean the rims with rubbing alcohol - it's a effective way to cut through the burned on stuff from heating through braking. I look for pits and grooves in the wheel and make sure they are true, meaning they spin freely without wobble. If your wheel wobbles it's time for an adjustment best done by someone with experience or you can quickly warp a rim beyond repair. At Sunshine Bike, the mechanics use a truing stand for a perfect alignment.
Tires - take a few moments to carefully inspect your tires. They do wear, and unlike the 50,000 mile warranty on your car's tires, a bicycle's tire might only last 1,500 to 2,000 miles depending upon many factors. You surely don't want a blow-out at 40mph downhill behind Highland Springs. It could ruin your whole ride. If you're not certain, please bring it in for a look-see by Sunshine staff - it's a critical component.
Be sure you properly inflate your tires as well before each ride - and today's new pumps are faster and easier than ever.
Cables - these are critical to the proper and smooth performance for brakes and shifting. If your bike is more than 2 years old, consider a tune-up at Sunshine and ask to have the cables and housing replaced.
Unless you keep your bike exceptionally clean, this is an area that attracts and holds dirt. It's not expensive to have this service done and your cycling time will be much less frustrating with a perfectly functioning bicycle.
Nuts, bolts and screws - it sounds obvious, but is everything tight enough? Be careful here however as overtightning can damage components on that expensive bicycle. Make sure obvious looseness is corrected - if in doubt - bring it by the shop.
Remember, there is a difference between a major tune-up and a simple adjustment. At Sunshine Bike Shop they offer FREE adjustments for life, and especially with a new bicycle, break-in will require minor tweaking as a result of normal everyday riding. This adjustment is done by our top quality service department, staffed with associates who know and love bikes.
It's peace of mind as you'll get special service from your friends at Sunshine Bike Shop.
